So this week I wanted to talk about two things. First our guest speaker Jeff Hopkins who came in to our class to talk about his school PSII he founded and secondly, our interactive class with Rich McCue on Canva.
The Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry allows for students to participate in inquiry-based learning. The students are able to research material that they have an interest in and create projects that are co-created by teachers. This allows them to learn the curricula they need to know while also pursuing something they are interested in. During their projects they have the opportunity to converse with multiple different teachers to help them get the most out of their projects. They try to do most of their classes face-to-face but they include virtual experts so the students get the best learning opportunities.
Rich McCue introduced us to the website Canva, which is a site for making info graphics. We went through a work shop creating an info graphic using step-by-step instructions allowing us to gain the knowledge to use this site in the future. This is an example of multimedia learning theory. This theory states that humans learn better using words and pictures rather than words alone. Images and words cannot just be thrown together there has to be careful thought and connection and the most important information needs to be portrayed using such things as info graphics. This would be a great tool to teach kids and to use for after school clubs or awareness. It also could be used in the classroom to convey certain information and could be useful as a project for students to learn to distinguish the most important information.
